Grading

ESL 111-101 final grades will be determined on the basis of the following:
  • 20% is for completing quizzes every Monday and Wednesday.
  • 20% is for contributing to the writing journal every Tuesday and Thursday.
  • 20% is for completing all reading assignments on the day they are due. Students will not get credit for completing an assignment one day later. Students will lose 10% of their assignment grade if the assignment is turned in late on the due date.
  • 20% is for completing all writing assignments.
  • 10% is for completing the final essay test at the end of the semester.
  • 10% is for active participation in class
Active Participation
To receive full credit for active participation, a student must do all of the following:
  1. attend every class on time
  2. answer questions when called upon
  3. never speak his or her native language
  4. behave as a mature adult by showing respect to everyone in the class
  5. demonstrate a willingness to learn

Course Description

ESL 111-101 is designed to develop students' proficiency in the areas of reading and writing. Using the textbook with high-interest reading selections in thematically based units, students will build skills for academic success. The course will also develop students' critical thinking, vocabulary, and grammar skills. There will be extensive opportunities for writing based on the book and personal opinions and experiences.
